Transcribers Needed

Realizing that a full transcription of all of the speakers' statements at the recent public hearings would help with the lively conversations going on around town, I'm requesting help from volunteers. Several folks have already volunteered, but I still need volunteers to transcribe the following speakers' statements:

Mab Segrest*
Si Kahn
Lewis Brandon
Signe Waller*
Claude Barnes
Gorrell Pierce
Ed Whitfield*
Yonni Chapman*
Jeff Woods*

(*these speakers may have written statements that will help with the transcripts)

Let me know if you can help and which speaker's statement you'd like to transcribe. Special thanks to Chewie who has already transcribed Virgil Griffin's statement and posted it here.

Update: The sound files of these statements can be found here. Let me know if you need help finding your speaker in this list.

Hi Jill,

Are these to be transcribed from video tape or audio tape? What format?

Good question, Roch. I'm actually hoping they can be transcribed from the sound files at the News and Record page: files aren't separated by speakers, but I can help to figure out where in those files you can find the beginning of a specific speaker. Let me know if you can think of an easier way to do this. I'm not sure if this answered your format question or not, but Chewie's format seemed good to me. Thanks for asking.

Does Chewie have video? It might be easier to tell who is speaking with acompanying video. If it's clear who is who on the audio files though, it would be simpler to be able to pause the audio and transcribe all at one's computer.

I am not sure if Chewie has video or not, but, until we find out, I think the way Chewie transcribed Mr. Griffin's statement--just putting Commission comments/questions in italics without trying to attribute them to specific Commissioners--works. (Let me know if you think it would be more helpful for people to know which Commissioner asked which questions.) It should be fairly obvious who the speaker is as opposed to Commissioners. Each day's order of speakers is listed on the N&R site and I'm happy to go through and identify times when each speaker begins if volunteers will let me know which speaker they'd like to transcribe.

Roch, by far the easier way to do it is with audio files on the computer. Email me if you need some specifics.

yall need to realize that this town is ripe for violent actions. Maybe you should just cut your ties now and end this communist agenda before somebody gets hurt. The time is getting near. We will not allow terrorists to continue to brain wash people. End the commission.

Ben, I appreciate your spirit in defense of freedom. But look at the events of 1979, and think about the goal of reconciliation. Taunts and threats can get people killed. That's what we are trying to move past.

Anonymous, sounds to me like you know little about Greensboro.

I do agree with you though that we will not allow intimidation by terror. Get it?
